Lesson twenty-six in the fourth grade Next Level Students character curriculum is titled “The Cell Phone” and is centered on the theme “Process.” You see, the idea or concept of a mobile device was proposed in 1947, but it took thirty-six years until scientists and researchers were able to develop and approve them in 1983 for consumer purchase. During this time, the developers had to make numerous modifications to it in order for it to perform what we now consider some of the most basic functions.
The newest iPhone or Android-based cell phone, currently available, has the same capabilities of a high-definition video camera, super computer, professional camera, and so much more, combined all in one handheld device. Now with over 15 billion cell phones in the world, the product of efforts put forth over a period of time, we have something that has deeply impacted society on a global scale.
It is nearly impossible to turn on the news, scroll online, or have a lengthy conversation nowadays without hearing about another factor that is impacting society on a global scale. Unfortunately, the pandemic and effects of COVID-19 is making a negative impact globally. Even though COVID-19 has been spreading for the last 2-3 years, however, it belongs to the Coronavirus family which scientists believe has been around for centuries!
Scientists and Health agencies have developed vaccinations and established safety protocols that decrease the effects of the virus, but whenever it appears to diminish, a new strand emerges. The virus has survived and flourished because it changes. On a cellular level, the virus adapts to vaccinations and the defense systems of it’s hosts, then alters itself to become a new variant. For the lack of better terms, the success or survival rate of the virus is based on its ability to make small changes in its composition over time. It is perplexing to think that a virus, a group of microscopic parasites, has the capability to overcome some of the best defenses of the most complex hosts that it depends on to survive.
Now that we had a little history and science lesson, it is time to land the plane! What is the moral of the story? Simply put, in order for us as Administrators, Educators, Support Staff, Professionals, Parents, whatever the title, to accomplish our goals or reach success we have to be willing to endure the process and change. Our pathway in life may appear completely obstructed or it may seem like we never quite reach the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, however, the same blueprint has been followed by almost every person or entity that we strive to reach. Reflect on this…What am I actively and consistently pursuing? What modifications have I been made to my strategies that have been implemented over time? Or, am I even willing to make them?
